F1 in Schools celebrated winning one of the motorsport industry’s most prestigious awards at a glittering star-studded event on Sunday night. At the 28th Annual Autosport Awards, F1 in Schools won the Pioneering and Innovation in Motorsport Award, a tremendous achievement for the global student technology challenge.
Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, was presented with the award by F1 in Schools patron, Ross Brawn, Team Principal, Brawn GP, and Christian Horner, Team Principal, Red Bull Racing. This iconic motorsport industry award has been won by some of the most important innovations in the sport, ncluding the HANS device, SAFER barrier used at race tracks around the world, and the GP2 Series. It is a testament to the impact that F1 in Schools has made on the industry that this award was conferred on the programme.
Denford said of receiving the Autosport Award “This is a fantastic achievement for F1 in Schools. We reach out to more than 15 million students around the world, introducing them to Formula 1 and using its popularity to encourage them to consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a career. The world of Formula 1 has embraced our initiative, with all the teams supporting us, which has been a very important part of our success. We can help to attract young, bright engineers to the industry and we hope that through our efforts, we will nurture the Ross Brawn’s of the future.
“I would like to thank Autosport Magazine for their support and for honouring us with this very special award. As we approach our tenth anniversary we have grown from a UK competition to a global initiative in more than 30 countries. We hope that our success will continue and we can support the F1 industry with top engineers in the future, through their participation in the F1 in Schools programme.”
The annual Autosport Awards was held at Grosvenor House Hotel in London. More than 1000 luminaries from the motorsport industry attended, including newly crowned World Champion, Jenson Button, and his team mate for 2010, Lewis Hamilton.
